History
The Dark Ages, spanning roughly from the 4th to 10th centuries AD, marked a period of dramatic transformation across Europe. As the Western Roman Empire fragmented, new powers emerged—Germanic tribes such as the Goths, Saxons, and Franks, as well as Romano-British communities defending their homelands. Warfare was shaped by shifting allegiances, migration, and the rise of early medieval kingdoms. Warriors of the time were often equipped with spears, shields, and simple swords, fighting in close-knit formations or raiding bands. The period also saw the introduction of new armour and helmet designs, like the spangenhelm, which spread widely across Europe. These centuries laid the groundwork for the emergence of medieval Europe, as cultures collided and blended through conflict, conquest, and settlement. The Dark Ages Army Builder set captures this diversity, allowing modellers to represent the wide spectrum of warriors who defined this pivotal era of history.
