VW T1 PANEL VAN Product Description
The origin of all present vans and transporters derives from the platform truck used in the late 1940s for internal transport in the Volkswagen works at Wolfsburg, which inspired the Dutch importer Ben Pons with the idea of a transport vehicle. From 8th March 1950 the first generation transporter, nicknamed by its fans the Bully , was mass produced. The van with the typical V-front and split windscreen was available in various versions including the box-type van. The unladen weight of this van used by many tradesmen and firms was about 975 kg with a payload of 750 kg. The technology was based on the Volkswagen Type 1, known as the Beetle so that the T1 had an air-cooled flat-four engine. The engine however had higher torque which gave the T1 initially 25, then after 1954, 30 hp with a top speed of 80 km/h which, compared with other transporters of the time, was very good. Even today these robust vans are still loved by veteran vehicle enthusiasts throughout the world.
