The term Gunpla refers to plastic mech, character, or vehicle models from the Japanese Gundam series and sold by Bandai; it is an abbreviation of "Gundam plastic model". It appeared in 1980.
GUNPLA PHILOSOPHY: A MODEL FOR EVERYONE! "without glue and paint All Gundam models are characterized by two basic characteristics: - the parts are nested - and they are molded in paint. Gunpla are classified into ranges (called "class") according to their quality and / or size.
The main ones are:
– NG No Grade (1980), although this term appears much later, it retrospectively refers to the first models released in 1980.
– HG High Grade (1990), the first higher quality range in 1/144 scale.
– MG Master Grade (1995), with higher quality than HG High Grade, including internal mechanics fully modeled in 1/100 scale. – PG Perfect Grade (1998), the most technically advanced series in 1/60 scale.
– FG First Grade (1999), an affordable clip-on range.
– HGUC High Grade Universal Century (1999), a popular reissue of the Universal Century robots.
– Model EX (2001), a series designed not for robots, but for vehicles and related flying machines.
– MS Mega Size (2009), scale 1/48.
– RG Real Grade (2010), similar to MG Master Grade with a printed internal skeleton, but in a size called 1/144, similar to “HG High Grade”.
– RE/100 Reborn One Hundred (2014), a new 1/100 scale shootout series. –
Super Deformed Gundam or SD Gundam is a Japanese animated series whose works are parodies of the Gundam saga, adopting the graphic codes of the super deformed.
However, an exhaustive classification is much more complex, as it depends on the scale (from 1/550 to 1/35), improvements (the range of master ratings exists in versions 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0) and special events (Ver.G, for example, the 30th series was released to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the series).
